or are you thinking of buying?
Héritage Montréal, a non-profit organization
dedicated to promoting and preserving
the architectural, historical,
natural and cultural heritage of Greater
Montreal, has been offering home renovation
and restoration courses for several
years. The courses are given by

To date, Héritage Montréal has helped
more than 8,000 participants, in Montreal and surrounding
areas, to acquire the knowledge they need to carry
out home renovations with a view to conserving and
enhancing the architectural character of their buildings.
This series of courses, offered every spring, is particularly
popular not only because of the valuable content,
but also its flexible schedule: two and a half hours,
one evening a week for seven weeks.
Subjects covered include:
• Montréal’s residential architecture
through history;
• Evolution in housing types and construction
techniques: general home inspection;
• Renovation planning and management;
• Foundations and structure;
• Exterior walls, roof and insulation;
• Doors, windows and exterior woodwork;
• Mechanical and electrical systems of a home;
The series of seven courses ends with a tour of a
renovation site, guided by experts, to learn from
one homeowner's experience. It's an excellent first-hand
example of the course material and of the fascinating
challenges to be met.
