Learn how WITH HERITAGE MONTRÉAL!

Learn what you need to know with Héritage Montréal courses for houses of all ages and all architectural styles

Are you interested in our built heritage? Do you own a home, or are you thinking of buying? Héritage Montréal, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and preserving the architectural, historical, natural and cultural heritage of Greater Montreal, has been offering home renovation and restoration courses for several years. The courses are given by architects, engineers and other.

To date, Héritage Montréal has helped more than 8,000 participants, in Montreal and surrounding areas, to acquire the knowledge they need to carry out home renovations with a view to conserving and enhancing the architectural character of their buildings. This series of courses, offered every spring, is particularly popular not only because of the valuable content, but also its flexible schedule: two and a half hours, one evening a week for seven weeks.

Subjects covered include:

• Montréal’s residential architecture through history;
• Evolution in housing types and construction techniques: general home inspection;
• Renovation planning and management;
• Foundations and structure;
• Exterior walls, roof and insulation;
• Doors, windows and exterior woodwork;
• Mechanical and electrical systems of a home;

The series of seven courses ends with a tour of a renovation site, guided by experts, to learn from one homeowner's experience. It's an excellent first-hand example of the course material and of the fascinating challenges to be met.

Publications, too!

Héritage Montréal, in collaboration with the ministère de la Culture et des Communications, has been publishing technical guides of interest to owners of historic buildings, managers to income properties, architects, construction contractors and specialized manufacturer. They are: Traditional Windows, Traditional Masonry.
