A message from
the City of Montréal

I am delighted to present you with the 2009 edition of the Heritage and Quality renovation Guide. For 11 years now, the City publishes this unique tool in keeping with our wish to help property owners across the island to carry out maintenance, restoration and renovation work that is respectful of our built heritage. Preserving and repairing our houses and heritage buildings are concrete ways to participate in sustainable development.

The City is committed to provide an exemplary leadership in the enhancement of our architectural heritage. I am convinced that, more and more, individually and collectively, we take to heart the preservation of these magnificent properties that are a testimony to the art of urban living that we developed throughout our history.

I strongly encourage you to make use of this guide, which is packed with great tips and information. It will help you carry out work that will fill you with personal pride and satisfaction. Our heritage is our collective legacy!

Gérald Tremblay
Mayor of Montréal

A message from
Héritage Montréal

Among the various initiatives devoted to promoting and protecting Montréal’s heritage, the publication of the Heritage and Quality Renovation Guide is one of the most eagerly anticipated each year, for it inspires Montrealers to take responsibility for their own living environment.

Heritage Montréal is delighted to be associated with this edition, the tenth in a fruitful collaboration with the Ville de Montréal. For over thirty years, our organization has been working hard to preserve the value of Montréal’s built heritage. Every project and every effort made in this direction raises awareness of the quality of the architecture and the living environment in our neighbourhoods.

I know this guide will continue to be of great interest to owners and residents who care about preserving the same concern for quality that guided the original builders. This is the true meaning
of sustainable urban development, an objective we are proud to share with you. Quality residential renovation: one more step in a vast movement aimed at perpetuating our Montréal identity in its
most distinctive form: our heritage.

Robert Turgeon
Chairman of the Board of Directors
