The rich commercial heritage in our neighbourhoods
WITNESS TO LOCAL HISTORY

This year, eight owners of office or commercial buildings located on the island of Montréal were honoured with a Heritage Emeritus Award. The Montréal Architectural Heritage Campaign would like to underscore successful interventions that respect a building’s integrity, the proportion of its openings, the quality of its façade, the blending of its materials, the unity of its composition and its relation to neighbouring buildings. These buildings greatly contribute to the vitality of commercial streets in the urban environment. Congratulations to these astute owners as well as to the professionals and companies that carried out the work!

CPE Jacqueline

This concrete and glass building was designed by the firm Lemay, Leclerc et Trahan architectes as part of the expansion of the Mouvement Desjardins. The Caisse populaire Sainte-Catherine-Labouré, across from the church bearing the same name, began its operations there in 1958. Since 2003, the building has been home to the Centre de la petite enfance Jacqueline. Despite a change in use, it has kept its original appearance.

The commercial ground floor of this brick triplex, which was built around 1910, is separated from the other floors by the original and well-preserved entablature. The showcase and recessed entry door to the business have been maintained in good condition. Note how discretely the sign blends into the façade.

Fripe-Prix Renaissance

This former post office, built in 1957 according to the plans of architects Mongenais et Chicoine, has been remarkably well maintained over the years. Since 1996, the building’s new commercial use has not altered the architectural elements typical of the 50s, as evidenced by the fenestration.

This house dates back to 1930. It underwent a series of repairs in 2005 to restore the commercial façade’s prestige of a past era. The stained glass, entablature, store window and masonry details have been remarkably well maintained. The plain sign highlights the original architectural details.

Built in 1906, this former food products warehouse, designed by architects MacVicar & Heriot, was converted into residential and commercial condominiums en 2002. The diligent maintenance of the building since its conversion enables us to appreciate its architectural qualities, which are an eloquent demonstration of early 20th century industrial buildings.
